As you may know, the Grammy Awards are meant to celebrate the art of music, and the industry’s biggest accomplishments from the past year. But there is another celebration that also occurs at the Grammys, which is the celebration of fashion. With artists looking for creative ways to express themselves and represent the art they create and designers eagerly awaiting to dress some of the most famous faces in music, the red carpet never disappoints, and can even reflect the times we are in and the fashion trends to come.
Fashion Trend Predictions
Although the red carpet usually reflects trends already occurring, public figures like music artists are commonly the face of up-and-coming fashion trends and can reflect the clothes that many people will be wearing in the near future, or reflect artistic trends we see in music artists and other celebrities.
The first style choice I noticed was a lot of elemental colorings and inspirations for artists’ looks. One main artist that stands out is Zara Larsson, with this being her first Grammys where she went all out on her iconic beach-girl persona, wearing a very mermaid-like inspired dress with messy beach waves. Other artists including Chappell Roan, Tyla and Coco Jones all had tan and maroon coloring to their dresses. FKA Twigs stole the show with elemental styling with her twig incorporated outfit and a leaf in hand. PinkPantheress and Doechii also had tan and earthy colors in their dresses.
Denim also made an appearance at the award show this year, as society shifts their perspective on jeans, from them first being for comfort, to as a piece used to dress up for a dinner and now are deemed fancy enough to wear to the Grammys. Shaboozey was the first artist to be spotted in denim, wearing a suit and bow tie with a pilot styled hat on top and jeans on the bottom. This outfit could be a reflection of how stylists treat denim use in the future. Another artist changing the denim game is Harry Styles. Showing up just minutes before he had to be on stage, Styles dazzled us with a sparkling blazer and denim jeans, ready to present Album of the Year.
Matching Girl Groups
Girl groups tend to be a small portion of the music industry, but they make a huge impact. Many groups were nominated this year and all of them came to the awards with enthusiasm and coordination. The first group being Flo, all with dark blue dresses/two pieces. All having the same coloring, but different style outfits. The “K-pop Demon Hunters” trio also came to the Grammys with black and white coordinated outfits, all expressing their own style while also representing their connection as a group. The most notable girl group of the night, however, was Katseye, who wore stunning white dresses with different styles that expressed themselves individually, with the color white uniting them as a band. Their coordination continued with their captivating performance later into the award show.
Black and White
One pattern that stood out the most at this year’s awards is the monochromatic coloring that artists and designers clung to this year, likely in aim of a sleek and mysterious look. Some in all white, like Kesha, Addison Rae and Katseye; some in all black like Lady Gaga, Justin and Hailey Bieber and Paris Hilton. Other artists went for a combination, like Billie Ellish, Miley Cyrus and Rose. One of the most notable outfits that came from this black and white trend was Sabrina Carpenter, who went onto the carpet with an all white lace dress with pearl accents. This outfit had to have been one of the most memorable of the night, with its detail and its correlation with her brand. Another artist that stood out was Olivia Dean. Dean made her Grammy debut in a custom Chanel dress that had black beading on top with a flowy white skirt at the bottom, which had to be one of the most mesmerizing Chanel pieces of the night added to the excitement that came with winning the Best New Artist award.
