“Tomodachi Life” is a trending Nintendo video game that was released worldwide in June 2014. The long awaited sequel of the game, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, was released on April 16. After fans waited 12 years for a new game, it instantly blew up in popularity, topping charts and being labeled as the best selling game of April 2026.
The game is an eccentric simulation where players can create Mii avatars to populate an island. Players have complete freedom when designing characters, which adds a playful sense of creativity to the experience. After creating characters, players get to observe and influence the wild adventures their Mii characters get up to. Users watch the relationships unfold, entertaining drama and crazy ongoing problems take place. Overall, players act almost like life coaches as the Miis fall in love, get married, form friendships and get into chaotic fights.
The game caught users’ attention and started trending on social media because of its uncensored chaos. Users have absolute freedom with the text their Miis can say due to this lack of censorship. Content creators, especially on TikTok, thus began to post the most unhinged confessions that go down in their games. This sparked a rise in viewership of this content and followers of the game.
Naturally, with the rise in popularity, I decided to try the game out. When I first started the game, I was instantly captivated by the adorable animations and catchy loading music. I was very excited to create my Miis and was ecstatic to see how many options of customization I was given. The game allows for a painted face option, which lets users make immensely realistic faces. I did not use this feature, however, as I am not much of an artist. I created a few characters and slowly started getting used to the gameplay. Social media often bends aspects of games, creating false situations that might not actually happen when trying the game out for yourself. However, when playing the game, I discovered that all the funny situations that occurred were not fake. I found myself witnessing very dramatic arguments and awkward confessions between characters. In general, I was very entertained with what the game had to offer.
I bought the game in the Nintendo shop for $60, not including tax. I personally think the game was worth it, but players who prefer more fast-paced games may get bored quickly. At times, I found myself waiting hours for interesting gameplay to occur. This game requires patience, since much of the entertainment comes from waiting to see what unfolds naturally. I eventually took a short break after playing for a while, but I still found the game relaxing and entertaining. All in all, I would highly recommend this game to anyone who likes chaotic yet hilarious simulation games.
