The upcoming movie “The Odyssey” is going viral on social media for its cast stacked with famous actors like Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Anne Hathaway. With the release of the cast, many are beginning to recognize the similar pattern of recasting the same actors. The recently released film “Wuthering Heights” has brought up this criticism as well, since it features Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie who have both been in at least five major films since 2022. This technique of casting famous stars to bring in previous fans and media attention isn’t new, as it started in the 1820s with the recasting of famous stage actors traveling to multiple cities. However, there has been a shift to completely relying on these larger names. As of 2025, 84% of major film studios feature famous actors in their movies, shifting away from casting lesser known people. Not only does this cause the film industry to be incredibly hard to break into, but it leads to reduced talent in the field and an overall decrease in diversity.
With the overuse of the same actors, the odds of breaking into Hollywood are growing increasingly slimmer. Large breakout roles are given to a celebrity who may have been in a recent popular movie, or even someone who will draw in more attention. This marketing tactic is effective for films, so those with a larger budget that may need to make more in return will tend to hire better known names. In turn, the amount of opportunities for actors is reduced. The film industry is already extremely hard to find employment in, as a lot of it comes down to networking advantages and connections. This increase of recasting makes the industry even harder to find a job in, which can cause several actors to change fields. Additionally, this can cause less unique acting styles as there are fewer new talents to advance the field.
Movie quality will also drastically decrease as the standards are lowered. This is partially due to big name actors having less pressure to perform better. They already know their name carries more weight in getting the job, which causes the decrease in the quality of acting. If a film company knows a certain actor will bring in more money, their skills often aren’t as valued. This commonly happens with children of previous actors, who hold merit from their family name. For example, this phenomenon occurs often with the children of previous famous actors. Celebrities like Margaret Qualley, who is the daughter of a famous actress, have a step up in the industry amongst others. This, however, makes films a lot more predictable due to the typecasting of these actors. This is already becoming common, as A-listers such as Dwayne Johnson repeatedly get overcasted as an action hero. Both these aspects will cause movies to feel more repetitive, with film companies relying on safer routes of recasting to bring back fans.
Although many feel tired of watching the same names appear on casting lists for upcoming films, an alternative solution is to find movies made from smaller budget studios. Often these companies have less money to cast well known stars, so they rely on talent or emerging actors. Only around 40% will cast someone who is recognizable, which is significantly less than the major studios. This introduces the audience to fresh acting, and allows for unique or creative performance decisions to be made. It’s important to support these smaller films in order to keep the acting field more diverse, which in turn allow for movies of higher quality.
