Cancer is everywhere. Every year, there are an estimated 20 million new cases and almost 10 million cancer-related deaths worldwide. By 2050, cases and deaths are predicted to almost double.
It is not just something we hear about: there is a 33% chance for a woman and 50% chance for a man to be diagnosed with cancer. But the good news is that 42% of all cases are preventable.
That’s where curingwithCARE comes in. CARE is an international organization dedicated to cancer awareness, research and education. With more than 40 chapters worldwide, the organization hopes to raise community awareness of cancer, how it affects everyone and how equity gaps in treatment can be closed. Through fundraising and communication, CARE will actively work with, support and learn about cutting edge research to help find more sustainable and less damaging treatment options for cancer patients. To prepare the next generation of leaders fighting cancer, the organization hopes to engage peers with guest speakers and industry experts.
Manheim Township High School is creating a new CARE chapter to help educate and fight all types of cancer in our community. The club offers a chance to compete in CARE’s annual research competition as well as countless opportunities for community service hours, leadership roles and making a real difference. Branches have made gift baskets for cancer patients, held Relays for Life and visited cancer centers around the globe. This new chapter hopes to partner with other organizations such as the American Cancer Society, local hospitals and cancer centers, and other CARE chapters.
There is an informational meeting in room 119 on Friday, Nov. 21 after school from 2:30 – 3:15 p.m. Please contact Olivia Hammerstone with questions at [email protected]. For more information about the broader organization, visit https://curingwithcare.org/.
