Have you ever wondered why you can’t find good music that fits your taste? Well, don’t fret, because I am here to help. As an avid music listener who has enjoyed more than 200 genres of music, I have prepared five playlists to help you find a taste of music that you will not be ashamed of.
Before beginning, we must answer the question: What is “good” music taste? Many people often frame it as socially acceptable music that is trending or popular among an individual’s generation. However, there is no universally “good” music taste, as it is subjective to the listener. “Good” music is not defined by others, but rather by one’s willingness to be curious in the realm of musical creativity. It involves being open to different styles and appreciating the meaning behind every song, whether that be lyrical or instrumental elements. Music is not only an art form, it is a way for an individual to express the inexpressible; connecting their personal experiences with the song’s emotional themes. When you reach a feeling of true connection with the music you listen to, you have officially achieved “good” music taste.
If you struggle to navigate through the world of music, here are five genres that relate different themes to your life:
Indie
Starting with my personal favorite, indie music. This style is often characterized by creative freedom and artistic experimentation. There are numerous sub-genres, such as indie rock, indie pop, indie folk, etc. The term indie stems from the word independent, referring to artists who create music on their own without the involvement of major record labels. Artists such as Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, Tame Impala and Vampire Weekend are a few primary examples of successful indie bands.
Listeners of indie music are often found to be creative and open minded to diverse tunes and thematic ideas. Indie music is raw and authentic, focusing on ideas of sadness and loss. The artists aim to create music that has a catchy tune but a heartbreaking theme, posing an extremely unique artistic expression. If you are willing to connect on a deeper level through vulnerability and emotional connection, check out this playlist:
Pop
Short for “popular,” pop music is known for its catchy melodies and mainstream appeal. Though many may see it as basic, I see it as rather simple and easy to enjoy. Pop music is known to be widely accessible and fun to listen to. The lyrics are often memorable and rhythmic, making it easy to dance to. This type of music can explore themes such as love and relationships, tying romance and heartbreak into the lyrics. Famous artists such as Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Beyoncé and Bruno Mars are icons in pop history.
It is not extremely difficult to get into pop music, as it is made to please the masses- many listeners gravitate towards the themes of love and romantic relationships, as well as the happy and carefree ideas. Alternative pop is also extremely popular, exploring darker themes of sadness and loneliness. Billie Ellish is a successful alternative pop artist whose music draws the appeal of many teens. If you are interested in having a good time or trying to get over a breakup, this pop playlist is for you:
Rock & Roll
Rock & roll is arguably the most diverse out of the five genres. Driven by its focus on electrical instruments and fusion of various genres, rock & roll has been around since the 1950s. The music is focused around rebellion, youth and freedom from societal pressures. Artists such as Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Elvis Presley and The Beach Boys all explored taboo topics of the time (such as sex, drugs and rebellion) and societal issues.
Also, do not be discouraged to listen to rock & roll just because your grandparent listens to it. Similar to indie music, an individual had to be open minded and creative to understand the complex themes and melodies that rock & roll has to offer. People who are more interested in wild, hype and unique music are often drawn to rock. If you are willing to explore these controversial and creative ideas, this playlist will entice you:
Rap
Originating in the Bronx, rap music is an influential genre of music that has changed hip hop culture and beyond. Characterized by its fast paced lyricism, rap was created specifically for breakdancing and the “hyping up” of a crowd. The rhythmic rhyming incorporates sounds from genres like soul and funk, but also rock. The artists are not only musicians, but storytellers through their music. Themes of success and personal struggles are vocalized, but discussion around inequalities is emphasized and embedded into rap culture. Artists such as Eminem, Drake, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj and Cardi B are revolutionary musicians who have incorporated the true meaning of rap in their music.
Many individuals who enjoy rap are often outgoing and diverse. Though at first it was directed toward the black community and their culture, now anyone can enjoy rap’s expressive and exciting lyrics. The energy of the music gives the listeners a sense of confidence and an insight to many societal issues that are being sung about. Whenever you want to have some fun or learn about the interesting themes of rap, check out this playlist:
Jazz
Last but not least, jazz music originated in African-American communities in New Orleans, making a huge cultural impact on the United States and the music industry. Its complex harmonies and incorporation of brass instruments create unique tunes and a variety of emotions that are felt by the listener. This being said, what makes jazz truly unique is that it is completely improvised, as the musician speaks through the music. Each one takes turns playing a solo that creates spontaneous melodies, as the other musicians respond. Though jazz has some framework, the musicians’ abilities to interact and improvise makes each song a new experience for the listeners. Popular jazz artists are Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole.
When listening to jazz, it is difficult not to feel something, whether that be sad or happy. Jazz is often said to “speak to the soul” and opens a completely new door for music to thrive and grow. It is not just a genre of music, but a culture based on creativity and deep thinking. You can be in any mood to listen to jazz, especially because it is constantly changing. These five genres only scratch the surface of what music has to offer. Every genre is its own form of expression and meaning. The more you listen to music, the more you will learn about yourself and the world around you. Once you are comfortable with what you are listening to and attempt to explore different music styles, I can confidently say that you now have “good” music taste.
