On Nov. 15, 2025, the opening night of globally-recognized girl group KATSEYE’s “The Beautiful Chaos Tour,” their new song “Internet Girl” debuted. It wasn’t until Jan. 2 that the song was available on all music streaming platforms. Since then, both the live and studio versions have received mass amounts of hate, all of which is vastly undeserved.
To quickly recap, KATSEYE is an international girl group formed under HYBE x GEFFEN records. It consists of six members from all around the globe. The group is commonly known for their hit songs like “Gnarly” and “Gabriela.” While “Internet Girl” has received the same amount of attention as the last two, not all of it has been positive.
The biggest controversy around the song is the lyrics, specifically the repetition of “Eat Zucchini.” Users across all social media platforms have been quick to attack KATSEYE on this line. Many believe it’s senseless, bizarre, and a waste of KATSEYE’s voices.
Now, repeating that phrase dozens of times isn’t exactly the mark of lyrical genius, but it doesn’t define the whole song and isn’t a reason to spread hate around KATSEYE.
One bad line does not determine an entire song, or even ruin it for that matter. While “Internet Girl” did take a little warming up for me, it is now one of my favorite songs of theirs. Most of the other lines, especially “Jealousy’s so overrated” and “Every picture of me is oh my god it’s her” are memorable and catchy, especially the ones that follow the chorus. I do not think the song is tacky or immature, but rather fun and a go-to when you’re in a good mood.
I think what “Internet Girl” shows us is that a song does not have to be deep and emotional to be good. Fun and energetic ones can be just as entertaining. “Gnarly” became loved because of its high energy and fun choreography, which are two qualities that “Internet Girl” shares. Another thing the two have in common is the popular dances, which are both viral TikTok trends.
The choreography that goes along with “Internet Girl” is less complex than KATSEYE’s other dances, but that’s what makes it good. The dance is something anyone can have fun doing and it’s similar to the singing style of “Gabriela” rather than the talking style of “Gnarly.” The girls have amazing dancing and singing skills, and “Internet Girl” manages to showcase both of those talents.
Another prominent issue going around online is that “Internet Girl” feels to some like it is trying to be “Gnarly” all over again.
“When the same tactics are reused, they become predictable,” The Korea Times writer Pyo Kyung-Min said. “And ‘Internet Girl’ reads an all-too obvious attempt from KATSEYE’s producers to repeat the blow up of ‘Gnarly’ this time with less success.”
The major similarity between the two is the awkward lyrics. Both remain very different as “Gnarly” has weird lyrics, like “Hottie Hottie Like a Bag of Takis, and Obvi Obvi they be trying to copy”, all over, but “Internet Girl” does not. When things get popular, companies will try to replicate them. “Internet Girl” is a solid attempt to blend KATSEYE’s two most popular songs. The lyrics from “Gnarly” are odd but catchy, which was attempted in “Internet Girl.”
“Internet Girl” works in ways people do not see; it allows all the girls to have their moment. Typically KATSEYE’s songs are dance-focused or vocal-focused, while this one is both. While some of the lyrics could use some work, that is really it. Besides the repetition of “Eat Zucchini,” the song is good. It is a catchy and fun preview of future KATSEYE music and the members’ vocal skills.
