On Oct. 2, the MT girls soccer team had its senior night, which entailed the recognition of all seniors on the team. This year, there were nine seniors recognized: Katie Gaalsywick, Jocelyn Parise, Sophia Russinko, Savannah Reed, Elizabeth O’Gorman, Alisyn Mulholland, Maisy Lapp, Jordyn Nguyen and Mya Zeigler.
The excitement of the night seemed to transfer onto the field for a close game against Cedar Crest. At the half, Cedar Crest had a lead of 1-0. However, Nikki Nguyen leveled the score with a goal in the second half, making it 1-1. The game maintained this score until the end of regulation play. MT and Cedar Crest then went into a “golden goal” overtime, meaning the team who scored first would win. After heavy pressure by Township in the OT period, Zeigler scored the game-winning goal.
“There’s a lot of emotion of senior night and it did affect our play a little bit, hence going into overtime. However, it was the best night and I wouldn’t want to do it with any other group of girls,” said Zeigler. “We are all so close and I could feel that this team wanted to win so bad. I just happened to be there when Liv [Parmer] played the ball to score the winning goal, but I couldn’t have done it without the energy of the night and the people around me.”
The team won the LL league final against Cedar Crest last week in penalty kicks and will begin the District Three playoffs on Tuesday, Oct. 22 with a game against Chambersburg.
