Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (R-Co) was one of the 147 Republicans who objected to Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s electoral college victory. She has been a prominent voice asserting electoral fraud, tweeting “Today is 1776” the day the Capitol Building was stormed. This image by Gary Skidmore is licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0

Elected Congressional officials who actively participated in objecting to President Biden’s electoral votes should be expelled from their positions. By participating in Trump’s fantasy they created an illusion that the 2020 election was fraudulent and unfairly taken from them. The statements made by Trump are not only false but also allowed for the continuation of a false narrative that led to the insurrection at the US Capitol. The false claims that the election was rigged or cheated have been proven time and time again false by trusted government officials and even members of Trump’s team and were rebuked in the courts too. Trump has already faced repercussions regarding his actions; he has once again been impeached by the United States House of Representatives with a senate trial vote pending.

Some notable Republicans in the House have even helped plan protests run by the group “Stop the Steal” (a group dedicated to stopping President Biden from “stealing” the election) in an attempt to help vocalize this growing sentiment. Another Republican Representative Lauren Boebert compared the day of Trump’s rally to the year 1776 stating “Today is 1776.” 1776 was a year during the Revolutionary War when American Independence was claimed. This comparison is not only unprofessional and disturbing but also antagonistic. Although never directly stating that they were patriots, the conclusion can be drawn and understood that that was the direction she was taking by comparing the day of Trump’s rally and plan to march the capitol to that time period.

One house Democrat Miki Sherrill said that they noticed visitors being brought into the Capitol and given what looked like tours. The actions of those elected officials have been ridiculed endlessly online and for good reason, but have not been given repercussions.

If nothing is done and those Congressional Republicans are allowed to continue to serve in the government, a precedent is set for incoming and future elected officials to not only be bribed but influenced heavily by future presidents’ actions. Continuing to allow a corrupt government to be at play is unacceptable. Americans fought for freedom and should continue to strive for it. Those who spoke out in support of Trump’s call to object to the results of the election, especially those who after the insurrection continued to play into the false narrative spewed by Trump should face repercussions and be removed from office immediately.
