March is music appreciation month and to celebrate, the state capitol invited different schools to perform for visitors. MT’s concert choir had the opportunity to go on March 28.
Singers spent the day both performing and learning about the history of the historic building. First, they sang in the rotunda with the colorful acoustics. They performed for a little under an hour and in that time a small crowd formed on all levels of the rotunda. One spectator even commented that the performance brought “tears to his eyes.”
Afterwards, singers went on a tour of the building. Highlights of this tour were the mosaic tiles covering the floor of the rotunda that depict the history of Pennsylvania; murals from Edwin Austin Abbey and Violet Oakley, the first woman to be commissioned with such a large and meaningful set of works; stained glass work from William Brantley Van Ingen and Henry Chapman Mercer and sculptures from George Grey Barnard. These intricate pieces of work depict not only the United States history but also Pennsylvania’s as well.
“It was a transformative musical experience,” said senior Grace Kline.
Choir director Mrs. Haldeman stated that she couldn’t have been prouder.
