Towards the end of the year at MTHS, the Tri-M Music Honors Society hosts an annual event called the Cabaret that highlights some of the most musically inclined students in the program. Through an audition process, students have the opportunity to showcase themselves through singing, dancing or playing an instrument.
For the seventh annual Cabaret, the theme was Under the Stars. There were three acts each with eight performances and students were able to perform in groups, duos or as soloists. Students outside of Tri-M also had the opportunity to submit an audition to be a master of ceremonies for one of the three acts. This year, Gabbie Reedy was the MC of Act I, Abirami Balasubramanian and I were the MCs for Act II and Lily Reaser and Terrell Russell were the MCs for Act III.
“Emceeing was nerve wracking at first because I didn’t want to make it awkward or have boring things, but as you go on you just go with the flow,” said Balasubrmanian. “Once you get the hang of it, the jokes keep coming whether awkward or not.”
Additionally, Mr. Rutledge’s AP Government classes had the opportunity to attend to get a photo for a Goosechase if they pleased, which contributed to garnering a large audience this year.
As this was the first Cabaret I ever attended, I enjoyed every moment of it. Every year, the students in the music program never fail to disappoint. The genuine love they all have for each other when a classmate goes on stage was touching to see and the cheering was uplifting at all times. The MCs were also very enjoyable to watch in between performances due to their hilarious jokes, clever transitions and their abilities to bring up the overall energy.
For students who have never gone to the Cabaret, I highly recommend you do at least once. They provide snacks, decorate the room beautifully and the environment is refreshing to be around.
