Since President Trump’s win in the presidential election of 2024, America has seen a lot of tax and potential amendments changes because of Trump’s already signed executive orders. Along with the many other orders Trump wishes to put in place, some of the most concerning issues are his plans for abortion rights.
In his second term as president, Trump’s administration has been involved with authors and contributors who are a part of Project 2025. According to Franco Ordoñez, Project 2025 also serves as a blueprint for the next Republican president from the Heritage Foundation. It is a project that consists of restructuring the executive branch and opposing abortion and reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, immigrants’ rights and racial equity. Trump has clearly said that states with abortion bans have a right to monitor pregnancies and prosecute violations, and is also open to restricting abortion pill access.
This is not the first time in history that Trump has interfered with abortion rights. In 2016, Trump promised to appoint Supreme Court Justices to overturn Roe v. Wade. Following his commitment, Trump’s appointed abortion opponents voted in 2022 to remove the federal right to abortion. Because of this, abortion is considered banned in 12 states, while other states have made abortion care almost impossible to get by restricting access to medication abortion. Now, millions of people who can reproduce live several hundreds of miles away from the closest abortion provider. This has forced more than 171,000 people to travel outside of their home state to secure their right to abortion care in 2023 alone. This makes getting an abortion in the country extremely difficult since women are not free to access medical care unless it is basically out of the state.
Toward the beginning of 2025, Trump signed an Executive Order to end the use of Federal taxpayer dollars that fund or promote elective abortion. This act reinforced the Hyde Amendment, which is an annual federal appropriations bill rider that restricts the federal funding for abortion services towards pregnancies that happened as a result of rape or incest or that puts in danger the pregnant person’s life.
During former President Joe Biden’s term, his administration had started to win the early stages of the lawsuit challenging Idaho’s strict abortion restrictions. The Supreme Court in 2024 retained a temporary court order that allowed Idaho hospitals to provide abortion if the pregnancy endangered the woman’s life or health. This remained until 2025 when Trump’s administration dropped the lawsuit that ensured abortion access in emergency rooms. Although the move did not change Idaho’s status on emergency abortion access in the state, Trump’s decision to drop the lawsuit securing abortion access clearly shows his stance on abortion rights to women as well as their health.
Because of the public’s response to losing our reproductive rights, Trump has tried to downplay his plans to further reduce access to ban abortion or other health care and claimed that his administration will be benefiting women and their reproductive rights. Yet his past actions, statements and signed orders make his intentions clear. President Trump is taking away women’s freedom by continuously trying to influence the right to abortion through lawsuits and orders. His determination to restrict women’s access to abortion medication directly harms women by exposing them to serious health issues.
