The Snowball dance, formerly known as the Sadie Hawkins dance, took place on Saturday, Feb. 1 in the cafeteria at MTHS. The theme of the dance was “Under the Lanterns.” This is the third year in a row that MTHS Mini-THON has planned and hosted this event; therefore, all profits went to supporting the Four Diamonds foundation.
“Almost all of the dance planning tends to fall onto the design heads, because most of the overalls are mainly responsible for planning the showcase,” said senior Mini-THON head Jocelyn Parise. “The design committee spent many days after school making decorations in order to bring their vision to life. The dance got students to come out and help us raise money for Four Diamonds so that is a successful event in my eyes. I hope in upcoming years we can make it a dance more people will attend.”
The traditional version of Sadie’s is a dance in which a woman invites a man as her date, as opposed to a man inviting a woman. MT changed the name of the dance to “The Snowball,” because “Sadie’s” is associated with the tradition, which does not accommodate members of the LGBTQ+ community. However, MT still upholds Sadie’s tradition for the Snowball dance.
The Snowball dance typically has fewer people in attendance than homecoming. There seemed to be many complaints this year about the turnout of the dance, as in the beginning, it seemed like there was more mingling and standing around rather than dancing; however, this is a common theme at most high school dances.
“The dance was a fun, lighthearted version of hoco,” said sophomore Mack Aluise.
