It’s award season, and a prestigious awards ceremony is coming fast. The Grammys are one of the most highly anticipated and covered award shows of the year, with people all around the world tuning in to cheer on their favorite artist and see which celebs win big. Before myself, and the rest of the world watches on Feb. 2, I’ve had the chance to analyze the nominations and figure out who should really win each category.
2024 has been the year of music. Artists like Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish, and Charli XCX have released albums over the past year. Saying that these artists dominated the music industry is an understatement. Swift and Carpenter were consistently on the top of the charts, and it’s hard not to lose count of the amount of eight Grammys XCX is nominated for. It’s clear to see the 67th Grammys will be one for the books. The question that everyone’s waiting to see: who will win each category?
When it comes to the Grammys, I find there’s five categories that people find the most important. They are Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Collab of the Year and Record of the Year. With this year being such an eventful year for music, the competition is high. Although I’m partial to certain artists more than others, I cannot deny there are some who deserve to win more than others, no matter what I or other people think of them.
When you think of the Grammys, you initially think of the awards, but a lot of people forget that so much more happens in the time between. One thing I always look forward to is the performers. The performing artists have just been announced, and it’s sure to be an unforgettable experience.
A good collection of artists will be performing, and some are sure to leave the crowd with their jaws on the floor. The artists are: Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Doechii, Charli XCX, Shakira, Benson Boone, RAYE, and Teddy Swims.
There are a few artists that stick out to me more than the others. For example, I know I can count on Sabrina Carpenter to give an outstanding show. She’s a natural performer, and her music never misses. She’s an artist I cannot wait to see get on stage.
After Chappell Roans’ immediate rise into the music industry and her sensational year, I think it’s only right that she’s performing on the Grammy’s stage. After her showstopper at the VMAs, we can expect an even better performance from her for the Grammys.
Billie Eilish is another massively popular artist that released an album this year. It’s safe to say that the album is a masterpiece, as Eilish stayed the top artist for quite a while after the release. Her songs “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” and “WILDFLOWER” are songs that immediately hit the charts and would be incredible to see live.
Doechii is not only nominated for best new artist, but she’s a performing one too. Her performance is the most highly anticipated for me. Her newest album, “Alligator Bites Never Heal” earned her a spot as a nominee for Best New Artist, and rightfully so. I know so many, including myself, are thrilled for her set.
As said before, this year was the year of new releases. The nominations list for Album of the year is: “The Blue Sun” (André 3000,) “COWBOY CARTER” (Beyoncé,) “Short n’ Sweet” ( Carpenter )“BRAT” ( XCX,) “Djesse Vol. 4” (Jacob Collier,) “HIT ME HARD AND SOFT” (Eilish,) “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” (Roan) and “The Tortured Poets Department” (Swift.) All these albums were influential to the year in music. However, only one can win, and I think it should be “HIT ME HARD AND SOFT.”
“She’s really talented and I think she deserves the award more than anything,” said sophomore Evie Carroll. “It’s very meaningful to me and my sister.”
Some may disagree, but I think it was a perfect album that was a mix of upbeat jams and mellow, pop ballads. Eilish clearly put her heart and soul into this album and something that both her, and her fans are so proud of. However, that’s not to say Eilish will win the award.
In truth, I think Swift will win this category for “The Tortured Poets Department.” Swift is known for raking in awards like it’s nothing and I think this time will be no different. The album has influenced the Swiftie fandom endlessly and has been top of the charts throughout the year. I think there’s a good chance Swift will be taking home yet another Grammy this time around to add to her collection.
Song of the Year is another long awaited category at the Grammys. This year the nominations are: “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” (Shaboozey), “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” (Eilish,) “Die with a Smile” (Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga,) “Fortnight” (Swift,) “Good Luck Babe!” (Roan,) “Not Like Us” (Kendrick Lamar), “Please Please Please” (Carpenter) and “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM” (Beyoncé.) There’s only one winner for this category: “Good Luck Babe!”. Like many others, I’m sure, this song was stuck in my head all summer long. It was one of the biggest songs of the year due to its catchy tune and impressive vocals. I’d love to see Roan win this category, and I am confident she will.
Is there anything better than an awesome collaboration between two of your favorite artists? 2024 was full of them. Here’s the nominations for collab of the year: “Us” (Gracie Abrams ft. Swift,) “LEVII’S JEANS” (Beyoncé ft. Post Malone,) “Guess” (Charli XCX ft. Eilish,) “the boy is mine” (Ariana Grande ft. Brandy & Monica) “Die with a Smile” (Gaga & Bruno Mars.) All these songs are absolutely iconic and have become favorites of mine. However, only one can win the award, and it should be “Us.” Abrams is an extremely talented and creative artist. She’s also yet to win a Grammy, so I’d love to see that happen for her and Swift. That’s not to say they will win, though. A duo we all know and love is Gaga and Mars, and there’s a good chance they’ll take the win this year. “Die with a Smile” was a hit from the moment it was released, and therefore, I feel that it will win.
Lastly, the category everyone waits for, Best New Artist. 2024 was the year of new artists, making the nomination list phenomenal. Those nominated are Benson Boone, Carpenter, Doechii, Khruangbin, RAYE, Roan, Shaboozey and Teddy Swims. For me, Roan is someone I remain in awe of. I truly admire her uniqueness and bravery, but she has a fun, different sound that has changed music this year, and I’m sure it will continue to do so. She’s clearly worked so hard to get this far, which is why I’d love to see her win Best New Artist. However, no one can deny that Carpenter has had a very successful year with the release of her album, “Short n’ Sweet,” and the start of her tour, so I think there’s a good chance that Carpenter could win this category. Either way, I’d love to see any of these artists win a Grammy.
Seeing the categories and nominees, I’m sure this year’s Grammys will be filled with interesting moments, and of course, lots of music. We’ll only have to wait less than a week to see what’s to come.
