Tropical Day, Twin Day, School Colors Day, Movie Character Day and Pajama Day. Sound familiar? That’s because those are the most unnecessarily reused themes when it comes to a typical MT spirit week.
“I feel like spirit days are fun but for me personally, I don’t participate in them a lot,” said junior Sophia Vo. “Not a lot of people participate either way so it kind of influences everyone in general to not participate.”
Spirit days at MT are always the same old themes every time they are announced. At this point, it is more surprising when Pajama Day isn’t part of spirit week. While they are meant to uplift the school’s energy, a lack of participation often dims their purpose.
“I feel like it’s the same thing every year,” said junior Dung Tran. “They also lack creativity and they are usually nothing new.”
Despite this, I will admit that the 2024 winter spirit week was a small but decent change from what we usually see. Although the overused themes of Twin Day and Pajama Day were present, I quite liked the inclusion of Ugly Sweater Day, but that was about it. The music between classes was also … a choice. Although new from what is usually seen, it honestly didn’t add much excitement.
In terms of what I’d like to see in the future, I just wish there were more references to modern-day times and trends. Back in 2022, MT had a “Bring Anything but a Backpack” spirit day that seemed to include the most student body participation. At the time, TikTok was exploding with videos of it. Whether you’re a social media user or not, a theme like that is bound to attract more participants due to its humorous nature, and that is what I wish we saw more of during spirit weeks.
I’ve noticed that the sports game day spirit themes that only the athletes do are usually way more creative than the entire student body ones. Although the athletes tend to be more “pressured” to do them, they fully represent what spirit days should be about.
Needless to say, I will give credit to MT’s student body spirit when it comes to the football games. It always amazes me how many of the students show up to support the players on the field, but this type of energy seems to disappear when it comes to any other collective student spirit week. All in all, better themes lead to more participation, and I hope that is what we see more of shortly.
