Math4Girls is a high school club that invites female students who are passionate about math to go to Landis Run Intermediate School each Monday. There, they teach girls through various math-related activities.
Math4Girls, currently in its second year, was made due to there not being many women throughout the STEM field and the gender gap within that field. Seven people make up the leadership team under the guidance of Mrs. Maryott, one of the high school math teachers. The team consists of: co-presidents junior Keya Patel and sophomore Alexis Song; vice president sophomore Bella Song; treasurer junior Sudiksha Patel; secretary junior Vinaya Doshi; and social media coordinator junior Sophia Vo.
The team works together to create fun and engaging lessons for the girls while also bringing attention to women in STEM.
“I joined because I want to be a pediatric nurse practitioner. I want to give back to the girls and hope that they like it just as much as I did,” said junior Emma Brown. “The ability to help young girls become more confident in themselves is something that drives me to come back to this club every week.”
“I have always loved math but in addition to that I love helping people more,” said Doshi. “Knowing that I can inspire girls and also help to foster their skills in math brings in new experiences that I wish I could have had when I was younger.”
Additionally, senior Ava Othmer said, “I have always wanted to be a teacher and with this club I am able to experience what it is like teaching in a classroom.”
All of the female students in this club may have different reasons for joining, but the key reason has always been to educate and form bonds that could last a lifetime. This shared passion for learning and connection makes the club a unique and enriching experience for everyone involved.
