Since the start of 2021, Senior Brooke Weaver has played on both the Manheim Township Varsity Field Hockey and Girls Basketball teams, putting points on the board and creating impeccable plays. Once 2023 came around, her younger sister, Sophomore Julia Weaver, joined the same two teams. The opportunity for the two girls to play on the same teams was unforgettable.
“Playing with your sister is like nothing else,” said Brooke Weaver. “It’s special and something I am so grateful to have experienced. I am more than excited to go to college next year but I am dreading leaving behind my favorite person, Julia.”
The sisterly bond the two girls shared was evident, as it uplifted each of them and enhanced their performances. They have made it to the second round of states during their field hockey season and are now starting their basketball season together.
“Playing field hockey and basketball with my sister has been such a cool experience,” Julia Weaver said. “I have always watched Brooke play and looked up to her growing up. Now getting to be on the field with her is so special and something I will miss so much next year when she is gone.”
During the 2024 field hockey season, the Weaver sisters contributed to the team’s many accomplishments, such as becoming L-L League champs and making it to the second round of the state playoff games. Both of the girls were also named L-L League All-Stars and were members of the All League team. This season, Brooke Weaver had 25 goals and 12 assists, finishing her career with 67 goals and 49 assists. Julia Weaver had 10 goals, 8 assists, and one defensive save, leaving her at a total of 13 goals, 8 assists, and 1 defensive save over her 2 years on the team.
“It’s been an honor to coach both Brooke and Julia over the past three seasons. I knew from the moment I met Brooke that she was going to be a great player for us. I heard rumors of Julia’s potential when she was in 8th grade and I was not surprised to learn it was all true,” said Coach Jessica Shellenberger. “Brooke and Julia are two of the hardest working players on our team. They work at field hockey year round, often when no one is watching, taking it upon themselves to drive to a field and work on skills, passing and shooting. Their love and respect for each other has also been beautiful to see. I know it’s really meaningful for them to compete together and I was just so happy to be a part of it.”
With the Manheim Township girls basketball season just starting, the team won their first game against Central Dauphin with a ending score of 46-39. Brooke Weaver put 18 points on the board.
“Brooke and Julia are exceptional student-athletes who bring not only incredible talent but also unmatched work ethic and leadership to our team,” said girls basketball head Coach Devonne Pinkard. “Their dedication to improving everyday inspires their teammates and elevates the entire program. It’s a privilege to coach players who set such a high standard both on and off the court.”
With many more games to come, the girls hope to claim more victories during their season.
