MTPA performed the fall play “Peter and the Starcatcher” on Nov. 21 and 23. Starring RJ Scacalossi and Alex Othmer, the play was an excellent adaptation of Peter Pan’s origin story.
“Peter and the Starcatcher” was an entertaining play full of humor and whimsy. Using both witty lines and physical humor, the cast drew many chuckles out of the audience. The play also featured fantastical elements that added magic and wonder to the performance. For example, to open the second half, the cast transformed into mermaids, sang a song and danced.
The play also showcased the acting skills of the cast. They balanced the light-hearted tone with drama and serious moments. In particular, Tim Cruz, playing the Black Stache (later known as Captain Hook), did an excellent job portraying his character as frightening but still full of comedy. Another actor who did an excellent job was Scacalossi as Peter. During intense solo moments, Scacalossi was able to capture a wide range of emotions, from terror to joy.
One thing I think could have been improved was the set design. Although the ships were represented well on stage, once the characters left the ships, background and overall setting relied on the cast’s acting ability and the audience’s imagination. For example, as the characters navigated a dense jungle, the stage background showed a sparse forest. The cast was able to portray the jungle setting through their acting ability, but they were getting little help from the stage.
Overall, “Peter and the Starcatcher” was a great play with excellent actors. Of course, the play could not have been possible without the hard work of the production crews. All of the students and teachers involved in this play worked together to bring the production to life.
