Cryptids: “a creature that is found in stories and that some people believe exists or say they have seen, but that has never been proven to exist” (Cambridge). These creatures have been lurking in the shadows of society, cast aside as fables. This cannot continue any longer. The most famous campfire story, one you’ve probably laughed at yourself, is Bigfoot. But it’s more than just a scary story: it’s a truth passed down generations.
Bigfoot, a tall hairy ape-like creature, roams the woods on two legs. Some believe that there is one Bigfoot, but others believe that there are an entire species of Bigfeet.
Sightings date back centuries; where humans began their trek to bipedal living, so did bigfoot. The most common places to find this Sasquatch being the Pacific Northwest, Kentucky and West Virginia. There have also been sightings of the Arctic version of Bigfoot, named the Abominable Snowman, in the Himalayas (Wonderopolis). Skeptics all over the world have seen him for themselves.
Matt Moneymaker, Bigfoot enthusiast, roamed the woods of Eastern Ohio for years in search of his magnum opus. At 2 a.m. Moneymaker finally came face to face with an eight-foot tall growling Bigfoot. From this encounter, he started the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization with over 3,000 members who also saw the Sasquatch himself.
Not convinced by eyewitnesses? I understand, as the world is full of liars, but you cannot deny scientific proof. Jimmy Chilcutt from the Conroe Police Department specializes in finger and footprints and has more than 150 casts of Bigfoot prints. These prints can’t be mistaken for a freakishly large human or even primate either; the print ridges flow lengthwise along the foot instead of horizontally. There is even a cast of a forearm, thighs, butt and legs, which are 50% bigger than regular human body parts. (National Geographic)
From these prints, potential nests and places Bigfoot is often spotted, there have been tons of DNA results that support his existence. In the wilderness of Kentucky, DNA samples were pulled from the soil where prints were found. Miroslava Munguia Ramos, project manager of UCLA California Environmental DNA program, found that the samples semi-matched both humans and primates. The problem with this is that there are no primates in that area, making the findings confusing. They can’t be humans because it doesn’t match but it can’t be from an ape because they don’t live in that area. The only logical conclusion is Bigfoot (Travel channel).
In my opinion, this evidence is indisputable. The earth is such a massive place; how do we know what does or doesn’t exist? I think with this massive amount of evidence, it would be close-minded to not believe in Bigfoot. Whether I’ve convinced you or not, don’t worry. Bigfoot doesn’t believe in you either.
