In the season of constant campaign ads, endorsements, and debates, it is important to consider all of the politicians that will be running for election in November. The following article will address the key candidates that will impact Pennsylvanians on the 2024 ballot. The Township Times does not endorse any candidate and this information is purely for informational purposes.
The Attorney General oversees the law enforcement and legal matters in Pennsylvania.
(D) Eugene DePasquale:
DePasquale attended the College of Wooster, University of Pittsburgh and Widener Law School. He is a former state legislator and served as Auditor General from 2013-2021.
Policy:
- DePasquale aims to reduce gun violence and crime by enforcing gun laws and restrictions.
- He will advocate for the rights of women’s health, unions, and the LGBTQ community.
(R) Dave Sunday:
The York County District Attorney served in the Navy and attended Penn State University and Widener Law School.
- Sunday aims to persecute gun, drug and gang violence through increased investment in law enforcement services.
- He also supports the protection of senior citizens and held scam prevention seminars in York County.
The U.S Senate consists of two senators from each state who oversee the federal budget and legislation.
(D) Robert P. Casey Jr.:
Casey is Pennsylvania’s current senator alongside John Fetterman, and he has held this seat since 2007. He attended The College of the Holy Cross and the Catholic University where he received his law degree.
Policy:
- Casey supports the rights and accessibilities for women’s reproductive health, the LGBTQ+ community and immigrant families.
- He will vote for the increase of environmentally conscious energy production in PA.
(R) Dave McCormick:
McCormick attended West Point University and served in the Army before receiving his Ph.D from Princeton University. He later served as the Under Secretary of Treasury and as Deputy National Security Advisor.
Policy:
- McCormick is in favor of keeping Pennsylvania’s current law on abortion, which is legal until 24 weeks.
- He wants to focus on increasing America’s innovation by promoting education in STEM and technical careers.
The Auditor General oversees a team of audits who review state financial information to ensure that tax dollars aren’t misused or wasted.
(D) Malcolm Kenyatta:
Kenyatta attended Temple University and Drexel University. He currently serves on the PA General Assembly.
Policy:
- Kenyatta promotes equal pay regardless of age, race or gender.
- He intends to work against mass incarceration and implement second chance policies for former inmates.
(R) Tim DeFoor:
Tim DeFoor was elected as Auditor General in 2021 and has more than 30 years of experience with auditing and fraud investigation at the Pennsylvania Office of Inspector General and Office of Attorney General.
Policy:
- DeFoor wants to increase financial literacy programs in schools.
- He will also make sure that tax dollars are going toward ethical projects, as DeFoor specifically supports the funding of community colleges.
The State Treasurer oversees the transaction of state funds and its investment in state projects.
(D) Erin McClellan:
McClellan attended the University of Pittsburgh and Chatham University before training in chain logistics under former Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neil.
Policy:
- McClellan wants to provide more stable job opportunities for the working class.
- She also wants to eliminate the fraud of state funds that stems from false tax return information.
(R) Stacy Garrity:
Garrity attended Bloomsburg University and Cornell University and served in the U.S Army Reserve in Iraq.
Policy:
- Garrity will continue to return unclaimed money to citizens from the state reserve.
- She also wants to decrease the cost of college education.
Representative in Congress (11th district):
A congress representative serves a two year term representing the concerns of their district.
(D) Jim Atkinson:
Atkinson always had an interest in politics and was further compelled to run for congress after the 2016 election.
Policy:
- Atkinson is an advocate for sustainable infrastructure and energy production.
- He also supports worker’s unions and promotes fair pay.
(R) Lloyd Smucker:
Smucker is the current Congress representative and has been serving district 11 since 2019. He also served two terms on the Pennsylvania State Senate where he was chair of the Committee on Education.
Policy:
- Smucker aims to focus on ensuring high quality education in district 11.
- He also wants to protect and promote agriculture by working to preserve farmland from development.
Representative in the General Assembly (96th District):
(D) Nikki Rivera:
Rivera attended the University of Pittsburgh and is a teacher at Warwick School District.
Policy:
- Rivera wants to make more physical and mental healthcare resources available at a lower cost.
- She also wants to increase wages for the working class.
(R) Eric Beezer:
Beezer owns a CBD business in Lancaster and holds a seat on the Manheim Township Republican Committee. He was previously a democrat but switched to the Republican Party at the beginning of 2024.
Policy:
- Beezer wants to protect the farmland in our district from development.
- He also promotes congressional term limits.
