On March 10, the 96th annual Oscars were hosted in Los Angeles, California. The Oscars is a Hollywood-based award show that gives recognition to commendable actors, actresses, movies and singers from the year prior.
This year’s Oscars show was hosted by talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. He introduced the categories and fired a few jokes, including a callback to the 46th Oscars show when a streaker dashed across the stage. Kimmel staged a bit for the presentation of the “Best Costume Design Award” featuring John Cena where he tried to convince him to run across the stage naked. Cena supposedly “backed out” of the bit at the last minute and, ironically, ended up presenting the award covered by nothing except the envelope, saying “costumes…maybe the most important thing there is.”
Like the Grammys, the Oscars had some notable music performances throughout the night. Early in the show, singer Billie Eillish performed the Grammy-winning song “What Was I Made For?” with her brother FINNEAS. But that wasn’t the only song from “Barbie” featured that night. Later, Ryan Gosling sang “I’m Just Ken.” Fans reviewed his whole performance as entertaining. Famous Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash even joined the performance.
The category many movie fans were anticipating was Best Picture. There were 10 notable movies nominated, but two specific movies went head to head in the box office when they were both released on July 21: “Barbie”, directed by Greta Gerwig, and “Oppenheimer”, directed by Christopher Nolan. Many people called this moment “Barbenheimer.” “Oppenheimer” ended up winning Best Picture.
