In June of 2023, MT girls basketball made a coaching change, hiring Devonne Pinkard as the new head coach.
Pinkard is a Lancaster native, graduating from McCaskey High School in 2013. He was a standout player in his four years of high school, accumulating over 1,000 career points, being selected as an All-State player, and being named as Lancaster Newspaper’s Most Valuable Player in 2013. He also owns a first-team spot on the Lancaster-Lebanon Hoops All-Decade Team from the years of 2010-2019.
After high school, he attended the University of Delaware, where he was a letter winner for all four years. Aside from basketball, he graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in sociology.
With his high school and college experience, Pinkard played professionally in a basketball league in Mexico. He returned home after one season.
With his playing career over, Pinkard decided to move to coaching. After two years as the JV boys coach at JP McCaskey, Pinkard was hired as the varsity coach of the Lancaster Country Day girls basketball team. In two seasons, he led them to a 33-13 record and two district semi-final appearances.
Pinkard now holds a varsity career record of 51-18, as MT has gone 18-4 in his first regular season. On Feb. 10, the team suffered a close defeat in the first round of the L-L League Tournament, narrowly falling to Lancaster Catholic. With the season coming to a close, Pinkard looks to build on his first season.
“The long term goal is to build sustainable success.”
Success on the court also changes the coach’s impact off the court.
“Being around student-athletes is always a treat. I am able to mentor and educate. I have the ability to impact someone’s life in a positive way,” said Pinkard.
The girls are currently ranked sixth in District Three and will begin district playoffs with a home game on Monday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.
