Each year, Mini-THON organizes the Snowball dance as a chance for students to have fun and to raise money for Four Diamonds. All proceeds they receive from ticket sales benefits the Four Diamonds foundation. This year’s dance is on Feb. 10 from 7-10 p.m. in the cafeteria and has the theme of masquerade. Tickets can be purchased for $10 during lunches this week.
The Snowball dance has been around since 1937. Commonly known as the Sadie Hawkins dance, the event provides girls the opportunity to ask their dates to the dance. Sadie Hawkins was a fictional character from a comic strip, where her father set up a race for all the unmarried men in Sadie’s town to find Sadie a husband. Whoever Sadie caught first would have to marry her. This story of gender reversal is the foundation for the unique tradition of the Snowball dance.
“The Snowball dance is one of our biggest fundraisers. I think it is lots of fun because it allows us to raise money for a great cause while also giving our peers a chance to have a good time,” said junior Jocelyn Parise, an overall chair of Mini-THON. “Our design committee is working very hard to make decorations and prepare for the dance and I hope lots of people go to see their amazing work.”
