Local WGAL meteorologist Joe Calhoun recently made a special appearance during the MT Boys Basketball practice on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at the Landis Run gym. A former Blue Streak basketball coach of 17 years, Calhoun shares a connection to the sport.
Known as one of the most trusted weathermen in the Susquehanna Valley, Joe Calhoun’s 36-year career held a wealth of experiences. As he approached retirement, WGAL organized a collection of special retirement segments to honor his career. The Wednesday segment included live broadcasts from the home of the Blue Streaks to recognize the time Calhoun spent as a coach.
Appearing in three different broadcasts, Calhoun included both the weather and guest appearances with several of his former players from 2004-2007.
His appearance at the practice shows the power of bonds formed by a team.
“I hope our team learned a little about how long and deep the relationships are when you are part of a team,” said head boys basketball coach Matt Johns. “The bonds that are formed between players and players/coaches are incredibly deep and long lasting.”
Coaching with Calhoun from 1999-2011, Johns is another example of the depth of this friendship.
As he looks towards retirement, Calhoun is excited for a more laid back schedule, helping out his kids, yet continues to love his job.
