On Friday, Nov. 3, Mini-THON held their annual Powderpuff football game for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. Students playing in the Powderpuff game paid $25 to participate, and spectators paid $5 to watch. All proceeds went to Mini-THON.
In the Powderpuff game, current varsity football members act as cheerleaders, coaches or officials, while junior and senior girls play football competitively against each other.
They had one practice and one scrimmage, which the seniors won, so they were confident that they would destroy the juniors in the real game. Senior Aubrey Barotti felt that the scrimmage “was easy” because during the practice the senior’s defense line kept breaking through the junior’s offense.
The juniors scored the first touchdown, with the seniors not scoring a touchdown until the fourth quarter. The game ended with a tie at 7-7, but after a series of kickoffs in overtime, the seniors won at 16-13 with a kickoff from Cina Teklai.
“It was a very memorable…high school experience,” Teklai said.
Junior Gracie Clawson feels that the game is designed for seniors to win because many people cheered for the seniors and she thought a lot of the calls were in their favor. However, she still feels that “everyone had a great time [and that] it was a good, friendly competition for an awesome cause.”
The marching band was also included in this game as a pep band. They supported both teams, and played the fight song for both juniors and seniors.
