Middle school counselor dies of COVID-19
November 5, 2020
Alexandra Chitwood, a Manheim Township Middle School counselor, passed away on November 5 due to COVID-19 complications, according to LNP. Chitwood had been a part of the Manheim Township staff for almost twenty years.
In an email sent to the families of Manheim Township Superintendent Robin Felty expressed her condolences in response to this tragedy: “Our hearts go out to the Chitwood family. We ask that you keep her in your thoughts and prayers.”
Moving forward, the district plans on closing the middle school building until a thorough evaluation has been done. Starting Friday, November 6, middle school students will be learning remotely. No announcements have been made regarding when the middle school is expected to reopen. All other schools in the district, however, will remain on a normal schedule, which includes face to face learning for some students.
At the high school, many faculty members were saddened by the news of Chitwood’s passing. Teachers crowded together outside of classrooms discussing the event, and some cried while breaking the news to their students.
Students are reminded to practice social distancing and observe health guidelines during this time. MTHS counselors and psychologists have made themselves available for assistance to any student feeling saddened, anxious or scared.
