Although it doesn’t seem like it, a lot can happen in the world in three months. While school takes a break for summer, the rest of the world certainly does not. Trying to catch up on the news can seem daunting, especially in the fast paced world that we live in. Here are some notable things which happened over the summer.
Politics
Politics is a quickly developing topic, and with recent events, it can feel like the headlines never stop, but here are the most important things to know. On June 22, President Donald Trump launched missiles toward Iran in an attempt to strike their nuclear bases to aid the Israel-Iran conflict. This caused debates between the Republican and Democratic parties along with debates within the Republican Party about whether it was necessary or if it was in his authority to do so.
Environment
Hurricane and tropical storm season hit the south hard this summer, with the most notable event being the deadly Texas floods caused by tropical storms. The death toll reached more than 100 across six counties, with a Christian girls’ summer camp, Camp Mystic, being the most notably affected. This brought the most attention to the floods and sparked concerns about the lack of action taken by the government and preventative services like FEMA that could have saved many of the lives lost.
Pop Culture
This past summer has been filled with new releases of albums and shows, the most popularly discussed being “The Summer I Turned Pretty”. The show’s final season is being released weekly with the last episode airing on Prime on Sept. 17. Over the years the show has developed a “Twilight”-like dynamic with fans developing “teams” for which boy the main character should choose. Brands and celebrities have even gotten involved from the Philadelphia Flyers’ mascot, Gritty, to activist Malala Yousafzai.
