We all know, love and grew up with the innovative, imaginative game of Minecraft. However, I never imagined I’d thoroughly enjoy a movie that’s based off of a video game.
You might be thinking: what was the movie even about? How do you make a movie about a game? What’s the hype? The possibilities were endless when it came to this movie, especially considering that the game revolves around creativity.
The story follows a brother and sister, Henry and Natalie, starting their new life in what seems like a boring town. It’s not long before Henry finds himself in trouble, but Natalie comes to his rescue as well as her two companions, Dawn and Garrett. All four find themselves stuck in the Overworld, not able to find their way out. Along their journey, they find Steve, the helpful and skillful builder. He guides them on their quest, helping them find their way home.
I’m not going to lie, I had my doubts about “A Minecraft Movie”. The concept seems too simple and, to be completely honest, boring. However, it’s safe to say I was pleasantly surprised. The film had me feeling all the emotions: happy, sad, angry, confused. By the end of the movie, I was emotionally exhausted.
One of the most interesting things about the experience of this movie was not the movie itself, but the audience. Once again, TikTok has done its job of making trends, even if they’re crazy. It’s a movie like no other, so you expect some unusual things to happen during your watch. The crowds have been known for yelling, throwing things and wreaking havoc in theaters. There’s been incidents where people have broken things, left large messes and even brought in live chickens. Fans have found the tradition of chanting, singing and yelling during certain parts of the movie, such as “I am Steve” or “chicken jockey” (if you know, you know).
Characters are what make a movie raw, and “A Minecraft Movie” certainly had interesting characters. To start off, the infamous Steve. He was not only played by the incredible Jack Black, but he had character development, amazing scenes and played such an important role in the plot. Natalie and Henry showed the importance of family, no matter how big or small. Henry specifically was made to be a little odd and different from everyone else. The adventure to the Overworld is his chance to connect with his creative side and realize that it’s okay to be different. Garrett and Dawn, although there as comedic relief, are an important part of the story and play a huge role in the end.
Now, as you can probably expect, the movie was a little cheesy. The acting may have been exaggerated, the lines may have been corny, but that doesn’t mean I enjoyed it any less. Part of the amazing experience of this movie is the energy you feel in the theater. Minecraft was something that was present in so many peoples’ childhood, so it’s hard not to feel excited, even though it might not make the Oscars nominations.
Overall, “A Minecraft Movie” was not only entertaining, but it brought back the childish fun we all need, whether on screen or in the theater. If you think it’s cringe, you’re wrong. This is your sign to buy the ticket, get in the theater and scream “chicken jockey.”

The movie is as flawed as it can get. Just because the characters show the importance of “family” does not mean the film successfully delivered the theme for the story’s sake. There was barely any dialogue on the theme itself. Most of the film was hilarious action which dialogue was completely irrelevant and forgettable. Regardless of the theme of a film even if that theme is morally right or wrong, the movie needs to successfully deliver it through tone, dialogue, and cinematic imagery. But also I do agree I had a great time watching it with friends even though it was a very bad movie. Character development I really do not see in any character, every one of the characters felt as they were at the beginning and the end. All I see really is a flawed screenplay nothing more. But it was great to make fun of. I screamed Chicken Jockey when the scene came up and chucked my popcorn at the screen with the rest of the crowd.
